Mission Statement
BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL
In the world of performing arts the stage is defined by four walls:
The back wall (or “upstage”),
The two side walls (the “wings”)
And the “fourth wall;” the wall that separates the audience from the performers
DANCE ALLOY THEATER, Pittsburgh’s premiere modern dance company and school, strives to BREAK THE FOURTH WALL, presenting world-class dance works that explore the human condition through the power of dance and the magic of movement. Presenting what is new and timeless, reaching out to audiences unexpectedly with its artistic vision, its power, its artistic intent, its humanity, deeply touching the very core of the human condition, creating a bridge of understanding, empathy, and connections between diverse audiences; and through providing high quality, non-competitive dance/ movement education for adults and children in the Pittsburgh region. The Alloy accomplishes its performance and education goals through interactions with diverse communities locally, nationally, and internationally.
History
Dance Alloy, Pittsburgh's premiere modern dance repertory company, was founded in 1976, as a collective of eight dancers. In 1980 the company opened the Dance Center with movement classes for children and adults. In 1982, Susan Gillis and Elsa Limbach were designated co-artistic directors.
In 1984 Elsa Limbach was named artistic director of the company. During her tenure, the Alloy commissioned dance works by an impressive range of emerging and established choreographers, and maintained a rigorous touring schedule, including seasons in New York City, and European tours to Bulgaria and Hungary.
In 1991, under the direction of Mark Taylor, Dance Alloy continued to grow employing dancers on a 34-week contract and a full time administrative staff. In 1995, Dance Alloy moved into its own state-of-the-art facility becoming a cornerstone in the revitalized arts district in Pittsburgh's Friendship neighborhood.
In 2003, the company appointed Beth Corning as Artistic Director, former director of Corning Dances & Company.
In June 2009 DANCE ALLOY THEATER appointed Greer-Reed Jones as the Artistic Director and Susan Sparks as Executive Director. Their vision is to continue to present world-class dancetheater works by national and international choreographers, colloaborate with local and regional dance companies, and educate the next generation through it's non-competitive studio school. Offering of a full range of non-competitive dance and movement classes for all ages and abilities, Reed-Jones is committed to bringing out the power and passion from each dancer.
Dance Alloy Theater's dance center has grown into one of the largest state of the art modern dance facilities in Pittsburgh. Through non-competitive classes and outreach activities it serves some 5,000 students of all ages and levels in a diverse range of movement disciplines. In addition, the center provides facilities for many local and national companies, choreographers, and teaching artists.
In 2011, DANCE ALLOY THEATER will celebrate its 35th anniversary.
